A great article written by Collen Egan was featured on parentdish.com. Young athletes need to be aware of creating options beyond their sport so that when things don’t work out, you can kick in plan B just as quick as plan A did not go as planned….Read the article and parents please help stress the importance of young athletes knowing who they are as a person, with or without their sport. It’s very hard for even me, an older athlete, who is overcomming an injury that took my plans left when I wanted them to go right. I have to deal with the feeling of being left out of a sport that has consumed a good part of my life. The big test for us is when things are over, especially before we want them to be, are we prepared???

By Collen Egan:

This week tennis champion Jennifer Capriati overdosed. It was allegedly an accidental overdose of prescription drugs, and she’s now in the hospital recovering.

Still, my childhood self was disappointed, and more than a little bit sad. Growing up, I was obsessed with tennis, and Jennifer was my hero.

As a teenager, Jennifer was a tennis phenom, shining at Grand Slam tournaments and taking down Steffi Graf to win Olympic gold in Barcelona. Her fresh-faced good looks earned her an Oil of Olay advertising campaign, and her all-American girl appeal made you feel like you, too, could make it to Wimbledon one day (or at least make your high school varsity tennis team).

But then Jennifer fell. Hard.

Her injuries prompted her to leave the professional tour. She dropped out of high school. Then was arrested for marijuana possession just two years after her Olympic win. She started to be described as a “former” tennis star.

Tales of child stars cycling from the red carpet to rehab are hardly novel (ahem, Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears). In fact, it’s almost expected. But while even a fallen star’s career can be resurrected repeatedly (thanks, reality TV), an athlete’s window of opportunity is much more narrow. So, what do you do when you’re washed up professionally before you’re old enough to vote or legally drink?

“You can never tell the collateral damage that being a child prodigy has on you,” Jennifer’s friend, tennis player Justin Gimelstob, tells CBS. He says she feels like the tennis world has deserted her.

Depending on the sport, today’s elite athletes start training as young as 3 years old, and being the best often means moving away from home for training, eschewing friends and school in favor of competitions and tutors. And the parents of talented young athletes often want their children to succeed just as much as, if not more than, the kid.

Athletes might need that kind of laser focus to become champions, but even if you win, you lose some of yourself along the way.

“It’s tough,” Gimelstob says. “She’s been through so many things and you just can’t account for what it’s like when you don’t have a normal childhood, you don’t have the social interaction. And she’s a courageous woman, and look what she came back from just one time to come back and be No. 1 in the world and to be a multiple Grand Slam champion, but she said it best: She said tennis gives her the structure. Without that, that’s when the problems ensue and she’s had trouble finding an identity and a sense of purpose, especially when you’re not able to finish on her own terms.”

Maybe your kid will never play on Centre Court at Wimbledon, or hit a home run during the World Series or nail a perfect beam routine at the Olympics. But whether their sports aspirations extend to state championships or the cover of Sports Illustrated, young athletes need to know that their talent might distinguish them, but it doesn’t define them.

It’s always good to get out and support where things all started for me….SUMMER TRACK. I recently spoke at the Carolina Elite Track Club, based in Raleigh, NC. I sure don’t miss the days training during the height of the heat in the summer, but it was so good to take myself back to where things all began. “Summer track” is really the code name for the USATF Junior Olympics program where tracks clubs from all across America come together for to compete and support the development of young track and field athletes. It was the first time that I realized the true depth and love of the sport and it made me want to compete at the next level after high school. I started running summer track for the Oxon Hill Boys & Girls Club when I was 15 and then followed my coach when she started her own team, Rising Stars. Rising Stars was not only the name, but the true essence of our team’s mindsets. We went on to travel the country and win the National Championship in the 4×400 meter relay. I am truly appreciative to the track programs that allow growth and exposure to where track can really take you.

To learn more about the Carolina Elite Track Club, please visit their site at www.carolina-elite.com. I met some true Rising Stars!

“I was an overweight teen and experienced a lot peer pressure while growing up,” says Lifestyle Family Fitness founder Geoff Dyer, who once tipped the scales at 248 pounds at 17 years of age. “I wanted to provide health club memberships for teens who may be facing the same self-esteem issues I once faced.”

Participation in North Carolina has about tripled since the program started in 2007 and is expected to grow to reach more than a thousand local teens this summer. Nationwide 11,000 teens participated in the program last year.

It feels good to speak to youth, especially when they want “it” just as bad as you want them to want “it.” “It”can be that dream that you know they can achieve. “It” can be that vision that you see them in while you sleep. Whatver your “it” may be, it can come true.

I spoke in Henderson, NC as the Keynote Speaker for the organization G.R.O.W, Growing Radiant Outstanding Women. I asked them what was their platform that they want to radiate through them. Is it strength and courage? Maybe, its wisdom or understanding. Whatever it may be, it is our duty to leave a legacy that can help transform our community and the lives of the generations that come after us. Whatever “it” is, you must be able to beam bright with actions that represent hope, faith, and power. I pray that our youth are able to find what their strengths are and share them in the world so that the “it” that they represent or aim to achieve, radiate throughout the world to the people who need that one particular gift most….
